Your 2019 Student Council: The Year So Far
The 2019 Student Council have hit the ground running and they’ve implemented some considerable improvements for all of us at Deakin! Let’s look at what they have achieved for students during the first half of their tenure.
24/7 Study Support
We’ve all done the late-night cram and it isn’t always easy. Thankfully your Student Council has overseen the introduction of informed support 24 hours, 7 days a week. Through Smarthinking you can now work in real time with tutors who specialize in a range of disciplines, or get help with general writing and study skills. You can even get assignment feedback within 24 hours during trimester breaks, easing the assignment pressure for a lot of us.
New Safe Rooms
The safety of all students is the utmost priority of your Student Council. To this end, we have endeavored to increase safe spaces at Deakin. Specifically, there has been the addition of a Queer and Womyn’s room at the Waurn Ponds campus, located in Building JB near DUSA’s student lounge.
More Library Facilities
Libraries are the beating heart of many university campuses and Deakin is no exception. Your Student Council has overseen the introduction of essential services to the library. Now equipped with microwaves, vending machines and water fountains, the Student Council has made the library all the more livable, and the intense study sessions now all the more bearable.
Removal of 80% Exam Weights
Weighted exams are already intimidating – but at 80% of the final grade they become down right daunting. Nobody needs that amount of stress. That’s why the Student Council has successfully overseen the removal of all exams weighted at 80% of the final grade! A much-needed change for many Law Students who already have it hard as it is.
Breakfast at Burwood
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but also the most skipped. That’s why your Student Council, along with our SASS team, have introduced free breakfasts every Wednesday at the Burwood Campus stage. Your Student Council wants you to have the best chance to make the most of your day, and that starts with brekkie!
The 2019 President, Jean-Marc Kurban, said he was thrilled with the progress of the Student Council’s achievements so far and is more determined than ever to continue the momentum.
“When we put together our team, I made sure it was a cross section of our university. The Student Council is made up of peer and community leaders from all aspects of student life – most of which have been involved since our first days at Deakin. We’ve made connecting with students, and resolving your issues our business. If you’re a student, and you want to see something done, we’re your platform to do so!”
As you can see, 2019 has been a massive year for the Student Council. With such vigor and enthusiasm, we look forward to seeing many more improvements made across all campuses.
