With Game of Thrones now a thing of the past its time to suss out some new binge-worthy entertainment. But the real question is, what to watch? With so many genres and series flying around the choice is overwhelming; luckily, we’re here to help with our personal top 10 favourites!
Number 10: Bodyguard
Bodyguard is not just an amazing way to get some more Rob Stark in your life, it’s also one of the best series Netflix has produced in years. Following the story of David Budd (Richard Madden) as he guards the Right Honourable Julia Montague MP (Keeley Hawes) the pair begin to tumble down the dark paths of power, lust and guilt all while forces move against them from the shadows. Fair warning though, once you start watching you won’t be able to stop!
Number 9: The Crown
Queen Elizabeth II, monarch of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth realms is the longest serving head of state but was she always such a perfect model of constitutional monarchy? Netflix’s most expensive series, The Crown, answers that question. With 130 million dollars spent to deliver the most vivid and powerful performance about the rise of Her Majesty, and with a third season on the way, now is the perfect time to smash the first two.
Number 8: Lucifer
The devil has had a few interpretations but none so out there as DC-Vertigo’s Lucifer Morningstar. Adapted to a TV show in 2016 Lucifer stole our hearts with ironically his honesty, heart of gold and insane family issues. Watch as the devil punishes the wicked like Jimmy Barnes and slowly falls in love, all to the chagrin of his father, mother and brothers. With season 4 having just dropped on Netflix this divine comedy would be sacrilegious to miss!
Number 7: The Good Place
What happens when you die? The question that has haunted humanity since its beginning finally gets an answer in one of the funniest series out. Through a clerical mishap Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) lucks her way into the good place and begins her life in paradise. With each season having more twists and turns then you can shake a stick at it’s going to leave you laughing, crying and gasping with shock for days.
Number 6: Star Trek the Next Generation
Prepare yourself for the show that sparked the debate of Kirk v Picard as you delve into space, the final frontier with the best Star Trek cast ever. Follow the crew as they engage new cultures, new worlds and some of Sci-Fi’s favourite villains. Led by the amazing Patrick Stewart whose out of this world acting brings the future to today. Live long and prosper, DUSA members.
Number 5: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
You know it, you love it; that’s right it’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine! If you haven’t seen this show we’ll honestly be surprised because it is massive. With such comedy giants as Andy Sandberg, Terry Crews and Andre Braugher and some of the best gags out, Brooklyn Nine-Nine will have you in stitches non -stop. But we’re sure for all you fans out there this was your expected vindication.
Number 4: Dirty Money
This one is for you docco lovers out there. Dirty Money will make you weep for humanity but at least it’s riveting. With each episode concerning an instance of modern corporate corruption, paired with key players in said events, it’s a must watch for any Philomath out there.
Number 3: Black Mirror
Black Mirror, boy howdy this one is a mind boggler. Prepare yourself for the spiritual successor to the Twilight Zone which delivers just as many terrifying realisations, situations and dark truths. As an anthology series, this bad boy is perfect for anyone who prefers to sip rather than skull their televised entertainment with a cheeky episode here and there.
Number 2: Handmaid’s Tale
Set in the misogynistic, horrific, totalitarian world of Gilead Handmaid’s Tale delivers an expert telling of Margaret Atwood’s original story. With the story driven by the stellar acting of Elizabeth Moss and a whole ensemble cast, Handmaid’s Tale will force you to confront some serious themes and events. Be prepared because it isn’t for the faint of heart!
Number 1: Seinfeld
Seinfeld, lorded as the best TV show ever by many, is a must watch if you haven’t seen it. Seinfeld takes the ordinary, and through some mystical process on par with magic, makes it into the funniest thing imaginable. From high school running races, men in capes, tossing bread loaves and waiting for a table, Seinfeld is an icon for a reason.
With all these suggestions, your list of what to watch should be full to bursting. So, spend some time on the couch and enjoy some of these amazing shows across the trimester break because hey, you’ve earned it!
