Extensions and Special Consideration

Hi there, I’m Patch, your friendly guide to navigating Extensions and Special Consideration at Deakin! Life can throw unexpected curveballs—trust me, I know all about it. Whether it’s a sudden illness, an accident, or a personal challenge, I’m here to show you how to get the support you need to stay on track with your studies. Let me share some of my own experiences and explain how you can apply for help when you need it most.

What Are Extensions and Special Consideration?

Extensions: Need a bit more time to complete an assignment? Extensions are for short-term delays caused by circumstances like minor illnesses or a busy week with unexpected circumstances. You can get an extension of up to 7 calendar days, or longer if you have a DRC Access Plan. Applications need to be submitted before the due date

Special Consideration: Experiencing a major setback, like a serious illness, family emergency, or unexpected event? Special Consideration supports you with adjustments, such as extended due dates or supplementary exams, so you can recover and succeed. Applications need to be submitted up to 3 days after the due date or date of exam.

To learn more about Extensions and Special Consideration visit DUSA’s webpage. Deakin’s Assessment webpage also provides great information, including the circumstances that may make you eligible for extensions and special consideration.

Patch’s Story: Applying for an Extension

A few weeks ago, I caught a bad cold right before my assessment due date. My paws felt heavy, and I couldn’t concentrate! Here’s what I did:

My cold was unexpected and outside of my control. I wasn’t able to do any work on my assessment in the week before my due date. Extensions are for short-term issues, so I logged into the student portal and filled out the Extension Request Form. I attached a doctor’s certificate as evidence.

It only took a couple of days to get the green light and I was given 7 extra days to do my assessment. The extra time made a huge difference!

Tip from Patch: Submit your request before the due date, otherwise consider applying for Special Consideration!

Patch’s Story: Applying for Special Consideration

Last trimester, I hurt my paw in an accident right before exams and was in hospital on the day of my exam. It was a tough time, but I didn’t have to face it alone. Here’s how I managed:

Special Consideration is for serious situations. Since my injury impacted my ability to attend my exam, I was eligible. On the day after my exam, I went online and completed the Special Consideration Application Form via the student portal and uploaded a Statutory Declaration.

A few days later, I received a response, my application needed more documentation. So, I spoke with a DUSA Advocate to learn what I could submit, they provided great advice, and I collected a medical certificate from my doctor and got my hospital discharge summary.

After I provided my additional documentation, my application was approved, and I received a supplementary exam that I was able to sit my exam in the supplementary exam period.

Tip from Patch: Be honest and thorough in your application – the more information, the better!
