Hi, I'm Alec. I’m a socialist, and I ran for a position in DUSA because I think our union can do more to support student activism and social justice.
I got involved in activism four years ago, as part of a campaign supporting refugees. Since then, I have been involved in campaigns for climate justice, Indigenous rights, Trans Rights, and more. There is no shortage of injustices in our society today, and I think student unions have an important role to play in organising students and campaigns around these issues.
In 2024, I helped organise Students for Palestine at Deakin. We pulled off a 3-week long Gaza Solidarity Encampment, taking part in a global student movement against Israel’s war on Gaza. We also organised a Student General Meeting for Palestine, at which 300 students voted to oppose the war, and for our university to cut its ties to weapons manufacturing companies.
I aim to use my position in DUSA to push for a progressive student union that supports activism.
If there’s an issue that you think the student union should be talking about, or a campaign they should be organising, come talk to me any time at the Socialist Alternative stall on Morgan's walk. I’ll be there most days of the week.
