From April 1-5 DUSA will be decking out all our campuses in rainbow to celebrate PRIDE Week and to show our solidarity, love, acceptance and support of the LGBTIQ+ community. Whether you’re a member of the community or an ally, we want you to come along and join in!
The last half decade has been historic for the LGBTIQ+ community, especially with the enacting of marriage equality across so many nations. From the USA, to Germany, to Colombia, to South Africa and finally Australia, almost 30 nations worldwide have legislated same sex marriage. But that still leaves many more to go.
With that thought in mind, we come into 2019 PRIDE Week with a renewed vigor to champion causes of equality which mean so much to us as Australians. Even in our own backyard we still have a long way to go until everyone is truly equal. That’s why it’s important that we always take time to support those of us who still suffer under discrimination and prejudice.
That’s why PRIDE Week is so important and this year, we are focusing on 5 things:
Proud. Respect. Inclusive. Diverse. Education.
To celebrate PRIDE Week and our continuing commitment to equality for all we’ll be hosting a whole truck load of events at all Deakin campuses!
For our Burwood campus we’ll be hosting a PRIDE Week Twilight Trivia Night. Students can book a whole table or register as an individual to answer heaps of fun and easy questions to win a ton of prizes! We’ll also be hosting the PRIDE MidWeek Meet Up with guest speaker Michelle Sheppard. Michelle is a trans woman, public speaker, advocate and radio personality. She embodies dignity, grace and the change that is needed to make a positive difference in other’s lives.
For our Geelong campuses we have our What’s the T? Drag Trivia Night featuring the one, the only, the fabulous Drag sensation, Sasha Starr! We’ll then be hosting two Pride Week picnics, one at Waurn Ponds and the other at Waterfront. Come along with your mates, receive a free PRIDE ribbon and lunch; all on us!
At our Warrnambool campus we’ve got a massive line up. Firstly, we have our PRIDE breakfast, a free gourmet grazing breakfast with our PRIDE pledge wall. Then join us to explore the LGBTIQ+ community through film at our PRIDE Week movie night! Finally, we’ve got our Rainbow Trivia Night where there’ll be heaps of fun and easy questions with lots of prizes to win.
Finally, across all our campuses we’ll be running an anonymous Q&A. If you have a question about the LGBTIQ+ community, please visit the below website and anonymously submit your question to our panel. The code is #Q952.
Happy PRIDE Week everyone! #DUSAPrideWeek2019
